Grades 4-6: June 18-22; July 9-13; July 16-20
In the The Sense of Wonder (1965), Rachel Carson wrote:
The years of early childhood are the time to prepare the soil. Once the emotions have been aroused — a sense of the beautiful, the excitement of the new and the unknown, a feeling of sympathy, pity, admiration or love — then we wish for knowledge about the subject of our emotional response. Once found, it has lasting meaning.
Acting upon these wise words, we will introduce your child to the beauty and complexity of the ecological systems of:
the CT and Westfield rivers,
South Hadley Falls and the HG&E hydroelectrical generation plant,
the ridges, forests and ponds of Mt. Tom,
the wetlands and beaver dams of Whately,
Warm Colors Apiary in So. Deerfield, and
the barns, animals and cultivated landscape of Westhampton’s Intervale Farm.
As we walk, instruction in species identification, soil types and the watershed concept will inspire creative activities in the field (photography, journal writing, story telling). Campers will be invited to write blog posts detailing our explorations.
The cost of the 5 day camp which runs from 9am-3pm is $300.00. Early drop-off & late pickup can be arranged.
